The team behind SuperCinema consists of industry veterans Michael Burke, Rachel Williams, Justin Younesi, and Michael Younesi, all of whom bring substantial experience in social marketing to the project. The campus, occupying a previously industrial lot in the Burbank Media District known as Audio Alley, will serve as a hub for indie films while housing the brand agency Concrete, known for its focus on social advertising.
The establishment of SuperCinema occurs as the Los Angeles film and television production sector faces volatility, with rising vacancy rates and studio operators scaling back operations. Despite these challenges, Michael Younesi and Michael Burke view this as an opportune moment for an indie studio to thrive. They draw parallels to the early 2010s when traditional ad agencies receded, paving the way for a surge in creator-driven content—a trend they believe could similarly favor SuperCinema.
Younesi noted that operating outside the traditional studio system combines risk and creativity, which can lead to significant opportunities, especially in a market dominated by major studios.
Construction of the SuperCinema campus is currently underway, financed through City National Bank and private investors. The campus is expected to be completed by early 2027. The founders indicated that the site was initially intended as a music studio, which ultimately did not materialize.
The studio will focus on indie projects, including Loose Ends, produced by LB Entertainment and Zero Gravity Management, and The Backlot, a supernatural tale set on an abandoned movie lot produced by Range Media and Artists for Artists.
The local government has expressed support for the project, with Burbank Mayor Tamala Takahashi highlighting how the studio's investment could invigorate the local community. She emphasized SuperCinema's potential to reinforce Burbank’s role as a vital center for filmmakers and entertainment businesses.
