Greta Gerwig has officially cast Meryl Streep as the voice of Aslan in 'Narnia: The Magician's Nephew', adding star power to the Netflix adaptation.
In a significant casting announcement, Greta Gerwig has confirmed that Meryl Streep will voice the iconic character Aslan in her upcoming adaptation of Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew. This was reported by Deadline on September 17, 2026, highlighting Streep's remarkable suitability for the role in Gerwig's vision for the Netflix series.
According to Gerwig, her quest for the voice of Aslan had a limited list of prospects, which culminated in choosing Streep. The acclaimed director explained that she sought an actor who could balance gravitas with joy, requiring someone with profound wisdom yet a sense of childlike wonder. Gerwig emphasized Streep’s unparalleled talent, stating, “that list is not a long one.”
This marks a notable shift in the portrayal of Aslan, the revered lion previously voiced by Liam Neeson in earlier adaptations. Streep’s involvement adds unmatched star power to Narnia, enticing both fans of the franchise and newcomers to the series.
Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew is based on C.S. Lewis’s work and chronologically precedes the events of The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe. It tells the story of Aslan's creation of Narnia, a pivotal moment in the saga. Gerwig's adaptation is set to premiere in IMAX on February 12, 2027, before its release on Netflix on April 2, 2027.
In 2023, Gerwig revealed her plans to adapt Lewis's Chronicles of Narnia books, stirring excitement among fans eager to see a new visual interpretation of the beloved series. Streep’s casting further heightens anticipation around the project.
Meryl Streep’s voice brings a rich depth to Aslan, a character representing wisdom and strength in the Narnia universe. Gerwig's deliberate choice reflects a commitment to showcasing Aslan's complexities and charm, an endeavor that may resonate well with diverse audiences.
Streep, already a four-time Academy Award nominee, embodies crucial attributes of Aslan as outlined by Gerwig. The combination of maturity and childlike wonder is essential for portraying a character that bridges the gap between fantastical elements and profound truths—key themes in Lewis's literature.
As this adaptation approaches its release, fans and critics alike are likely to pay close attention to how Gerwig and Streep interpret and visualize this enduring narrative. With high expectations and a legendary cast, the filmmaking team's direction could redefine how these classic stories reach modern audiences.
