Sony Music Entertainment Japan has announced a capital and business alliance with GungHo Online Entertainment, focusing on game development and IP utilization.

In a significant move for the gaming and entertainment industries, Sony Music Entertainment Japan (SME) has formed a capital and business alliance with GungHo Online Entertainment. The announcement was made by GungHo Online Entertainment on August 31, 2026, detailing plans for collaboration on game development and the utilization of Sony's intellectual properties (IPs).
According to Anime News Network, SME will acquire shares of GungHo in a deal valued at approximately 28.6 billion yen (around $179.3 million). This acquisition will involve SME purchasing 12 million shares of GungHo from SON Financial LLC, following a share transfer agreement. The transaction is set to conclude by December 30, 2026, pending regulatory approvals, potentially making SME the largest shareholder in GungHo.
Part of the partnership will focus on exploring joint development and operations of various gaming platforms, including smartphone games, console games, and PC games distributed by GungHo. Notably, this collaboration aims to enhance new game projects by leveraging SME's vast intellectual property assets.
While entering this alliance, GungHo Online Entertainment, known for popular titles such as Puzzle & Dragons and Ragnarok Online, plans to maintain its management independence. Despite the influx of capital from SME, the company will continue to operate as a publicly-listed entity on the Tokyo Stock Exchange's Prime Market.
The strategic partnership comes on the heels of a leadership change within GungHo—former CEO Kazuki Morishita stepped down in February 2026, with Kazuya Sakai taking over the role. This restructuring may help streamline the company as it embarks on new endeavors with SME.
The involvement of SME in GungHo Online Entertainment signals a pivotal moment for the gaming sector in Japan. By pooling resources and expertise, both entities could significantly elevate their market presence. SME's experience in music and entertainment may drive innovative cross-promotional strategies within GungHo's gaming portfolio, attracting diverse audiences.
This partnership also aligns with SME's strategic goals since it launched its gaming publishing label, UNTIES, in 2017. As game development becomes increasingly integrated with entertainment, leveraging crossover potential through existing franchises may benefit both companies.
As the details of this business alliance are finalized, the gaming industry will closely watch the developments and potential new projects that may emerge from this collaboration. While the immediate impact on GungHo’s gaming titles remains speculative, the alliance opens doors for ambitious projects that harness the combined strengths of these industry leaders.
