Tom Holland has revealed that Sony Pictures had significant intentions to incorporate Venom and Morbius into the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). This announcement came during a promotional appearance for Holland’s upcoming film, Spider-Man: Brand New Day, on the Happy Sad Confused podcast. Holland indicated that Sony Pictures Motion Picture Group chairman Tom Rothman had strategies for a crossover, yet those plans never materialized due to timing issues.
In 2015, a pivotal deal between Sony Pictures and Marvel Studios allowed Peter Parker, played by Holland, to join the MCU while enabling Sony to build its own Spider-Man spinoffs. This arrangement led to the creation of Sony's Spider-Man Universe (SSU), initially beginning with Venom in 2018. As Holland noted, there was a vision to further merge characters like Venom and Morbius into the MCU ecosystem, leveraging Holland’s role as Spider-Man to intertwine the narratives.
Following the success of Venom, which became a box office hit, Sony expanded its universe with films like Morbius and announcements for Kraven the Hunter and Madame Web. However, subsequent releases did not perform as well, leading to a downturn for the franchise.
